Poetic Justice: feminism and poetry

Ought to flag this new development up in between poems from the Gawain sequence. Feminists, and proto-feminists, follow this link. Anti-feminists, best not to.

As if I didn't have enough to do these days ...

Dear Jane

In a comment I left on an Independent article entitled 'Poetry Professor 'relieved to quit', I mention you as a possible replacement for Ruth Padel. I don't know whether you've ever considered standing for the poetry professorship at Oxford but I really think you should. The money's not great but you get to eat at high table several times a year and your raised profile would result in increased sales of your books. If you did decide to stand, I would vote for you - literally!

Pull the other one, Simon. It's got bells on!

Seriously, if I ever was put forward for something like that, which is next to impossible, you'd be the only one to vote for me.

Must be something to do with my snarl ...

Dear Jane

Shame! Sorry to hear that. Still, it was worth a try! By the way, if you ever want to borrow any of my work to fill up any awkward spaces on Horizon etc, please feel free to do so. Most of it is available on Franglo.com Literary section.

Dear Jane

I have just posted a considered comment on the Poetic Justice: feminism and poetry site which was more or less instantly deleted. The moderator asks for an open debate on these issues and then deletes everybody she disagrees with. To me, this is no better than censorship and is, I'm afraid, all too typical of the British Poetry Establishment. I'm so glad you're not like that!

You're either mistaken about the name of the forum you visited, Simon, or you are being deliberately provocative.

I've checked through my Admin logs for yesterday AND the day before. I am the only admin currently active on that forum, and I have certainly not deleted any posts there at all. (Except for one, and that was an inappropriate post by Desmond Swords, so unless you are he, you have made a mistake.)

Indeed, unless you had previously registered there under a woman's name - or a genderlessname and not declared your true identity to me as required under the rules - it is impossible for you to be a member. And why is that? Because, over 24 hours ago, I closed the Poetic Justice forum to new members - all applications must now come through me so I can verify identities before allowing membership.

In other words, for you to have registered and posted there yesterday - and had your post deleted! - without my having any knowledge of it, is actually impossible.

I have no reason to lie about this. If I HAD deleted a post, I would be perfectly open about it and willing to explain why, as anyone who knows me will testify.

So, if you not trying to make trouble by saying all that, I can only suggest you are mistaken and should think carefully about what you've said.

Politely, Jane

Dear Jane

I am exactly who I say I am and have nothing whatsoever to do with Desmond Swords - although I do find his posts amusing. Honestly, Jane, I am not trying to cause any trouble at all. I know better than to provoke a Scorpio! All I am saying is that one minute my post was there and the next minute it was gone. I have probably read far too much into this. As I pour myself another glass of Rose, admire the rolling Limousin countryside and play my favourite CD 'La Grande Sophie', I could not be feeling more mellow. Over the past twenty years the British Poetry Establishment has treated me like shit but I do not include you in that generalisation or Katy Evans-Bush or a couple of other good people. I hope that this clarifies things a little.

P.S. The photo is of my wife Rusty!

Dear Jane

A guy named Gary Fitzgerald said that his comment mysteriously disappeared too so it's probably just a technical problem. My earlier euphoria has completely subsided and I'm off to bed now with a headache.

Bonne nuit,

Simon

I've just been looking at the Harriet blog thread and seen Gary Fitzgerald's comment there.

Are you sure we haven't been talking at cross-purposes?

Do you mean you have posted at the Harriet blog about the Poetic Justice forum and your post disappeared THERE?

Because that's nothing to do with me. I'm not connected in any way with the people at Harriet, and if it's any consolation, they removed almost all or maybe all my comments on that thread too. Go figure!

Dear Jane

I'm glad that's sorted out! I assumed that Annie Finch had removed my post. Had I thought it was you, I would not have said a word about it. My two favourite maxims are 'Discretion is the better part of valour' and 'Least said, soonest mended'. I'm pleased that we are back on speaking terms!
