Just One Book!

My own publishers, Salt Publishing, as some of you may know, has hit some very hard times recently, due in part to discontinued grants from the Arts Council. This has happened to a number of publishers, both small and large, across the Uk, and probably worldwide too.

Earlier today Salt Publishing announced that all their forthcoming 2009 titles were to be axed, and only backlist titles would be available via Print on Demand. I was aware of the situation beforehand, and thought all was lost. I have since heard, however, that they are trying to save the 2009 list by a combination of methods. One substantial method is by encouraging people to buy books from Salt.

If you would like to help save the 2009 list, and possibly keep Salt Publishing financially viable into next year as well, please follow the suggestions below:

Here's how you can help us to save Salt.

JUST ONE BOOK

1. Please buy just one book, right now. We don't mind from where, you can buy it from us or from Amazon, your local shop or megastore, online or offline. If you buy just one book now, you'll help to save Salt. Timing is absolutely everything here. We need cash now to stay afloat. If you love literature, help keep it alive. All it takes is just one book sale. Go to our online store and help us keep going.

2. Share this note on your Facebook and MySpace profile. Tell your friends. If we can spread the word about our cash crisis, we can hopefully find more sales and save our literary publishing. Remember, it's just one book, that's all it takes to save us. Please do it now.

Have just ordered Tim Dooley's Keeping Time, a title I've put off buying since it came out late last year. Will duly post this notice on my blog.

Here's hoping Salt pull through this difficult time.

I have posted likewise on my blog and Facebook page, Jane. If we can get the rest of the blogosphere on board hopefully things can change for Salt.

Hi Jane,

I'm not sure I'm going about this the right way, but I'd like to join the Poets on Fire forum and it says to look you up online and ask? My addy's johemmant@gmail.com

Many thanks.

Hi Jo

It's great that you'd like to join POF. The reason for needing to look me up online and ask to join is simply to prevent spammers - and troublemakers posing as nice, ordinary people (we do get such idiots, trust me) - from getting in and causing mayhem.

So you see my email address in the sidebar here? You need to email me and tell me all about yourself and your poetry background/history. And you'll need to be quite specific.

We have someone so desperate to get into the POF forum that he creates and maintains websites and blogs under false names, sends out poems for online publication under those names, then applies to join. Once in, he causes trouble between members, posts up lunatic ramblings and mass-emails everyone on the board with malicious libel and general unpleasantness. So those people who apply to become members, and who are not already known to me, need to make sure I understand they are REAL people and not this person operating under an assumed name.

It's a nuisance, I know, but I'm afraid that's the way it goes. This guy has been libelling me all over the internet for several years now and continues to cause trouble even though not a member. So basically, he gets in over my dead body. And besides, I loathe spammers. ;)

Looking forward to your pitch!

J.
