Joining Salt as a Commissioning Editor

Sorry to interrupt A Short Season of Other Poets in this abrupt manner, but the big news is finally out. I have skipped the usual publishing tradition of tea-making and dutiful licking of envelopes for five years, and am joining Salt Publishing as a Commissioning Editor.

You can find the full story on the Salt Confidential site.

For those eagerly awaiting a new poem, another poet will be up on Raw Light very shortly. Though there's a bit of a queue now, to be honest, and indeed I may have to say to any further hopefuls, 'Namore, thanks.'

Congratulations! But I have a question: what does a "Commissioning Editor" do?

Congrats Jane, that's super news. So, are you looking for poetry MS's?!

A Commissioning Editor does what it says on the tin ... commissions new books. Which means, yes, I am looking for poetry MSS.

[She says, and hurriedly barricades herself into the house for fear of a stampede.]

I won't, however, take the chosen titles all the way through to production unless there's a special reason for that.

Basically, I choose the writers and get the MSS ready for production. But once a MS is ready, I simply hand it over to Chris at Salt and he does the rest: proofs, cover, marketing decisions, etc.

So I get the fun part without any of the aggro - a good deal all round!

So, I'm commissioning now for 2010 and beyond. Oh, and I'm not keen on dark chocolate.

Belated congratulations - I started a new job a couple of weeks ago and haven't been keeping up with blog reading. Good to see credit where it's due.
