Happy Birthday: Sold!

Yesterday was my birthday, which made it doubly exciting not only to travel down to London for the RNA Winter Party, but also to be called by my literary agent in the morning, quite out of the blue, and told that a potential deal was on the table for the huge Tudor historical I've been writing most of the year. Transworld had only received the full manuscript a couple of weeks before, so I hadn't been expecting such a rapid response.

An astonishing phone call. And what followed was my most memorable birthday ever!

Ten minutes after our little group of novelists was due to leave our Waterstones Picadilly pre-party 'tweet-up' and move on to the winter party proper, my mobile went. I dashed off to answer it somewhere quiet, and returned glowing, to let the others know my book had sold, as part of a three book deal, to Transworld for a very generous six figure sum.

Still processing that information here. It's so exciting and such a marvellous birthday present.

Though, perhaps needless to say, my youngest kids are all busy drawing up their hurriedly revised Christmas lists.

Congratulations Jane. Fair play, there'll be plenty who won't be happy about this, and although we've had our (comedic) set to's, I've always thought you had some kind of magic.

Can't wait for the begrudgers to start harumphing..

Thanks, Bo!

And Barbara, isn't it great? I'm very pleased.

Desmond, I can't imagine who would 'not be happy' about this or why. Most poets won't mind me crossing the floor to prose.

Thanks, Kath! Another year older, huh?

At risk of repeating myself, many congratulations once again - that's wonderful news, Jane. I can't wait to see your book in print.

Thanks again, Liz - I shall never forget the sight of you slumped in that chair at the end of the RNA party, saying 'I'm so jealous!'

And Marilyn, thanks, it's good to be able to come up to the Birmingham meetings. And now I know it's the *library* steps, ahem, and won't keep standing about in the wrong place for ages!

While everyone's visiting here, try feeding the fish. It's addictive, honestly.

Hover over the pond and they rush to the cursor. Then click for concentric circles and watch them gobble up the fish food that appears. It's so cool!!

Congratulations! And Happy Birthday! Now how are you going to top it next year?

Jane Holland said...

Thanks, Wendy. I shall just have to swim the Channel, I suppose. Bloody nippy in November too.

Dear Jane

Well done indeed! All your hard graft finally provoked a rich harvest. Moving into prose paid off for Sophie Hannah and it's obviously paid off for you too. I'm delighted for you!

Love from Simon

P.S. Perhaps now is the time to buy a house!

Thanks, Simon! Yes, Sophie's done very well.

I've talked about this with the DH and we've both agreed not to buy yet. We want to live near the sea again, and right now we're in the dead centre of England. So buying a house here would be wrong for us and might tie us down for years and years. But the kids are happy at their schools here and I'm doing a course at uni here, so we're in no big hurry to move either.

Maybe in two or three years' time?
